York Foodbank welcomes new Local Organiser

24th April 2025

We are delighted to announce that we are joined by Helena Mellows as our new Local Organiser.

Helena joins us in a role partly funded by Trussell, with the overall aim to coordinator local activities to pursue the goal of eliminating poverty and hunger.

York Foodbank is dedicated, together with Trussell, to reducing and ending the need for food banks as a response to poverty. As our Local Organiser Helena will be equipped with the support and training provided by Trussell, to develop and deliver our local organising programme, gathering people with lived experience of poverty to identify areas where change is needed and organise campaigning to secure positive change.

In doing so Helena will spearhead York Foodbank’s participation in the national organising programme alongside Local Organisers in Trussell foodbanks across the region and the wider UK.

Helena moved to York in 2020 to study History at the University of York. Before joining the team at York Foodbank, she spent time working in archives and in higher education. Since moving to York she has been a member of St Michael le Belfrey church, where she has been volunteering as Foodbank Coordinator for the past year, gaining experience of working with foodbank clients and volunteers.

Helena is pictured at St Joseph’s foodbank centre. and with our manager Adam Raffell.
