York Foodbank goes through 700,000 kg of donations milestone!

24th April 2025

In the last six weeks, the foodbank warehouse here in York has received just over 6000kg of donations, meaning that since we began operating in 2012, we have now gone through the milestone of 700,000kg of donations received (704,000kg to be precise)!

This does sound like a huge amount, however we have issued over 693,000kg of donations to the six foodbank centres in the same timeframe. To put all that into context, this would mean 700 trips in our van filled with a tonne of donations coming in, and another 693 trips of a full van to the centres to drop those donations off. Given that this is nearly 1400 van-loads, if you lined these vans up end to end it would cover nearly 8km, or in other words from our warehouse at Clifton Moor halfway around the York ring road.

Stock concern:

Although 700 tonnes sounds like a huge amount, our current stock is at just 11,500kg – and dropping by over one tonne (1000kg) a month – and so we are appealing to all private and corporate donors for donations at this time.

Once donations are collected and sorted in the warehouse, between five and six tonnes of donations are then sent out to the centres for client food parcels each month. Most foodbanks in the Trussell network nationally purchase all the food for their clients using grants and financial donations. York Foodbank has historically in the main relied on donations of food but we have seen an increase in the demand, leading us to purchase food from our grant/financial reserves.

Naturally as prices have increased, demand for our services has risen and at the same time, with people and businesses feeling the same pinch, the level of donations has dropped.

We value all our donations hugely. To now have weighed in (and out) over the last 13 years almost 1.4 million kilograms of donations is remarkable. The fight against poverty and hunger goes on however and we ask that anyone who can consider making a food donation does so. There are various methods to get these donations to us:

Collection points exist at supermarkets:

Tesco Askham Bar (Tesco products purchased in store and donated give us a further financial grant)

Waitrose

Asda Monks Cross

Donation cages are located in York at:

Work With York

Virgin Money

You can donate and bring to our warehouse on Bleriot Way, Clifton Moor.

If you have a significant large donation please contact us and our van volunteer team could collect on a Tuesday or Thursday morning.

We appreciate all donations however small or large at this time.

The list of our most needed items is available on our website and in the BankTheFood app.
