The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has donated a number of phones and laptops to various charities, including York Foodbank.
We have received 6 A-grade refurbished laptops and 5 smartphone handsets, which have been donated to further our charitable objectives.
Computers 4 Charities did the refurbishment work on the items and Business in the Community were part of the influencing team enabling FSA to do this.
The explanation of the project from FSA is explained by Paul Turner, head of Digital in FSA:
“Following the lockdown, our IT disposal contract was up for renewal. This presented an opportunity for the digital team to find a supplier who could recycle our end-of-life laptops and phones without contributing to landfill waste. We aimed to align this with our social commitment by benefiting the communities we live and work in across the UK”.
“This initiative is a significant step towards our Environmental Sustainability Strategy goal of reducing ICT waste to 0% landfill and increasing reuse and recycling annually”.
“After a thorough procurement process, we partnered with Computers 4 Charity (C4C) and Business in the Community (BITC) to provide recycled and refurbished technology to smaller charities. Our first batch of securely data-wiped and refurbished computers is ready for distribution to selected charity partners”.
Paula Welsh, Senior delivery Partner added “In May 2021, Computers 4 Charity became a partner for refurbishment and community donation. They rebuild and upgrade PCs and laptops, doubling their working lives. All donated devices are securely data-wiped to government standards and tracked, ensuring 100% environmental compliance, culminating in the donation of 500 laptops and devices to charities to date. The devices have been distributed regionally to support charities near the FSA’s offices in York, Cardiff, London, Belfast, and Birmingham, with a focus on food sector charities and social mobility related causes”.
Adam Raffell, manager at York Foodbank said “We are delighted at York Foodbank to receive these devices which we will now put to good use in the work we do to tackle poverty and hunger”.
